Frequent Questions and Answers

General

1. Is it worth installing solar panels for my home?
In short, yes. Solar panels are a smart choice for renewable energy. Given Malaysia’s year-round sunny climate, installing solar panels can help you save energy and costs.

2. Can I install solar panels for condominiums?
Condominium owners must ensure they have legal rights to the property where the solar PV system will be installed. This may involve obtaining permission from the condominium management or homeowners’ association, particularly since the installation will impact common areas like the rooftop

3. Will your solar panels work at night and on cloudy days?
Unfortunately, no. Your solar panels are designed to convert sunlight into energy, so they won’t be generating energy at night or on cloudy days.

However, when solar panels are not generating energy, your home automatically switches to drawing electricity from the grid, ensuring a continuous power supply.

4. Is my rooftop suitable for a solar panel installation?
In sunny Malaysia, most rooftops are a great match for solar panels. However, if your roof is super steep or has a complex design with multiple angles or dormer windows, it might not be the smoothest fit for a solar panel system

These features can complicate panel placement due to limited space and may increase installation costs.

5. How much does a solar panel installation cost in Malaysia?
The cost of a solar panel installation can vary based on several factors including the number of solar panels needed, roof material, and the complexity of the project. Get a quote for your residential or commercial property from our listed companies today.

6. How long is the payback period for a solar panel installation?
The average payback period for a residential solar panel system is about 6 years.

However, this largely depends on the size of your solar panel system, your peak electricity consumption times, and your overall electricity usage. Properties with a larger solar panel system and higher energy usage may enjoy shorter payback periods of 4 to 5 years.

7. Will my roof be able to take the weight of solar panels?
Typically, roofs are built to withstand human weight, with a point load of at least 100 kg/sqm (250 kg/sqm for concrete roofs). On average, a solar panel system weighs between 30-50 kg/sqm, with a maximum of 70 kg/sqm when concrete ballasts are used on concrete roofs. Therefore, weight is generally not an issue.

Technical

1. What type of solar panel should I install?
The preferred choice among many property owners is a Tier-1 solar panel with a warranty of at least 25 years. Additionally, we recommend monocrystalline panels as they have the most efficient cell technology, giving you the best return on investment.

2. Which are the best solar panels and inverters for my system?
Most solar panel suppliers in Malaysia will only use panels and inverters manufactured by Tier 1 manufacturers globally.

For residential systems, some of the most favoured solar panel brands include Jinko and Trina; common inverter brands include Huawei, GoodWe, and Solis. This industry-wide preference for renowned brands highlights the commitment to quality and reliability in solar installations in Malaysia.

3. Which are the best solar panels and inverters for my system?
The warranty period for most solar panels is between 12 to 25 years. Within this period, your solar supplier will replace any defective solar panels or panels with efficiency levels below guaranteed rates, free of charge.

Warranties on your solar panels are usually registered with the manufacturers. However, you can rely on your solar installers to contact the manufacturers and handle any replacements covered by the warranties on your behalf.

4. Does the solar panel system come with a battery?
No, a solar panel system in Malaysia often involves a grid-tied setup that does not require solar batteries. This setup enables surplus solar energy to be fed back into the grid.

5. How many solar panels do I need to power my home?
This depends on your energy usage and roof dimensions

6. Can I sell unused solar energy generated by my solar PV system back to the grid?
Under NEM, any unused solar energy will first be exported to the grid, effectively selling it back to TNB. However, this exported energy will only offset your TNB bill for the given month, potentially reducing your bill to zero. Any surplus unused energy will be carried over to offset the TNB bill for the following month.

These credits are valid only until the end of the calendar year; any unused energy credits will be forfeited if not utilised.

Regulations

1. What is Net Energy Metering (NEM)?
The NEM scheme enables the exporting of excess solar energy generated by the PV system during the daytime to TNB. This allows customers to earn credits on a one-to-one offset basis (1 kWh exported = 1 kWh credit offset against 1 kWh consumed).

If generated credits exceed your monthly electricity bill, the surplus will be carried to next month. These credits are only valid until the end of the calendar year. They will be forfeited if not utilised.

2. Who is eligible for NEM?
TNB customers in Peninsular Malaysia with no outstanding fees are eligible for NEM, subject to the availability of the NEM Rakyat quota. As of July 2024, 88 MWac remains out of a total of 350 MWac.

3. What is the Maximum Capacity Allowed for Residential PV Systems under NEM?
For domestic or residential consumers, the allowable maximum capacity of the PV system installed is 12 kWp for a single-phase system or 72 kWp for 3 3-phase system.

4. What is SolaRIS?
The Solar For Rakyat Incentive Scheme (SolaRIS) is a government program designed to increase renewable energy capacity to 70% by 2050 and reduce carbon emissions. This program offers a cash rebate of up to RM4,000 for new residential customers.

5. Who is eligible for SolaRIS?
TNB customers and Malaysian citizens can apply for SolaRIS, provided that their solar systems are successfully commissioned by March 31, 2025. SolaRIS is subject to a quota that has not yet been publicly disclosed by the government authority.

6. How much SolaRIS rebate can I receive?
The amount of SolaRIS rebate you can receive is based on the declared installed capacity of your solar PV system in kWac, which can be found on your NEM Rakyat certificate.

The rebate amount is RM1,000 per kW, with a maximum rebate of RM4,000. For instance, if your system has a capacity of 2.5 kWac, your rebate would be 2.5 kWac * RM1,000 = RM2,500. If your system has a capacity of 5 kW or more, the rebate is capped at RM4,000.

7. How do I receive my SolaRIS rebate?
The rebate will be deposited into your TNB-registered bank account after the system’s commissioning and successful application.
